Meet the 2016 Award Winners

The biennial co-sponsored event of the Surface Engineering Association and the Contract Heat Treatment Association was held at its new venue, the Midland Hotel Manchester on 30th September 2016.

The fantastic event, which has continued to increase in stature and popularity over the past few years, saw over 200 members unite for an evening of recognition and celebration of the surface engineering industry’s achievements and progression over the past 2 years.

The Midland Hotel Manchester proved to be an excellent venue choice with its grand Edwardian façade and impressive public rooms, and personable staff – the food was excellent and the drinks were flowing.

Before we introduce our winners, we would like to place a special thanks to our dedicated sponsors, without whom the event simply would not have happened. In no particular order, they are: Citation, Serfilco, Schloetter, QMS, VAS / Ipsen, British Jewellery & Giftware International, Air Products, Sumari, Surface World, Finishing Magazine, Stephen Price Design and Stratique.

All awards were carefully considered and judging was particularly difficult due to the high-standard and record number of all applicants.

The judging process.

Entries are received by the administrator and made anonymous before being passed for evaluation by the judges – all of whom work independently at this stage of the process.  Judges take into consideration the following criteria:

·         Merit – the extent to which the entry meets the awards criteria.

·        Degree to which the entry demonstrates best practice in the industry.

·        Recognition that smaller businesses may not have the same resources as larger organisations.

The judges are given a folder containing entries for each award category and asked to choose their individual three finalists.  This is done without conferring with fellow judges.  These decisions are then passed to the administrator who allocates 5 points to the winner, 3 to the second place and 1 to the third.  The results for each judge are then totalled and where a clear winner emerges, the judging is deemed complete.  In the eventuality that there is no clear winner, the judges are allowed to discuss their choices so that a second round of scoring can take place.
