The Horizon 2020 Project

The Horizon 2020 Project - what it is and how does it impact on surface engineering?

What is the Horizon 2020 Project?

The Horizon 2020 Project is the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.  It is the biggest EU research and innovation programme to date with funding of over €80 billion available over seven years for organisations, businesses and individuals who are committed to drive economic growth, create jobs and improve the environment.

How is the SEA involved?

The SEA has joined with other European organisations and businesses to form PROCETS, to develop new environmentally friendly coatings using funding from the Horizon 2020 Project.  This will in turn safeguard the future of the surface finishing and coating industry.

How will it impact the Surface Engineering Industry?

Rather than continuing with the use of certain coatings that have restrictions placed on them under European legislation, PROCETS is tasked with developing more environmentally friendly thermal sprays and electroplating methods which will eventually replace hazardous substances such as hexavalent chromium.

Eliminating the negative health and environmental impact of these hazardous substances (or substances of very high concern – SVHC) is a main priority for the European Commission and subsequently for those businesses involved in surface engineering throughout Europe.  PROCETS is championing the development of new technology to support and protect these businesses.

SVHCs are commonly used in coatings for components in industries who are always looking for innovative solutions to improve the performance of their products, such as automotive, aerospace, and oil and gas engineering.

The SEA is fully committed to the Horizon 2020 Project and the PROCETS research and development of safe and environmentally friendly new coatings that deliver superior properties compared to those of hard chromium plating.
