Chairman’s blog – Spring 2023
Dear members,
I am extremely proud and humbled to have been elected as chairman of the Surface Engineering Association for the next two years.

To those of you who don’t know me, my family business John Stokes Ltd has been involved in Industrial Hard Chrome plating for 49 years (and counting) and like you all, we are proud of our industry, whilst tirelessly facing the everyday mounting pressures that have seemed to be relentless over the last couple of years.
As I am sure you are all aware, the current issues surrounding policy and authorisations, in particular REACH, are at the forefront of the work and considerable efforts of the committee led by Dave Elliott our chief executive. Having personally been a committee member for the SEA for over a decade, and being part of the consortium which the SEA has developed for REACH, I can assure you all we are doing our upmost to achieve continued use for a sustainable and professional future within the United Kingdom.
The SEA is a diverse committee with very strong membership, one which has representatives from all areas of our industry. We look to members old and new to assist, and work as closely together as possible so that we can go positively into the future of surface finishing within in UK.
As part of our efforts to assist the sector, we arranged a briefing luncheon at the House of Lords to explore ways in which the Government can support the sector financially with the astronomical energy prices and also how the Government can reform and regulate the energy sector.
