Chairman’s blog – Summer has arrived, with the promise of BBQ’s and beer whilst we watch England, Scotland and Wales doing battle in the European Championships – the pandemic may not be over, but this summer promises to be better than last. In spite of the continued pandemic the Surface Engineering sector looks to be in good health with positive feedback from those I have spoken to and hopes that an end to lockdown measures and easing of travel restrictions will help boost our sectors recovery.

As we head into the summer there are of course hangovers for deep lockdown, notably logistics and supply chain issues, along with commodity price increases to contend with but I am sure these will be short term problems that will ease as we head through 2021.
SEA activity has been focused on REACH once more, with Chromium Tri-Oxide re-authorisation at the forefront of our minds. We are working with the HSE & DEFRA to understand what re-authorisation will require and hope to have more news by the start of July.
We are also working with the BATF to provide much needed training packages for the sector, starting with some basic introductions to Surface Engineering and Safety packages for new starters within our industry.
The coming months will provide the chance for our industry to re-connect with a range of events planned including the BSTSA supported CHEMUK in September, the SEA Awards in October and Advanced Engineering in November – so don’t miss your chance to join us and join in!
